Operation: Winchester -- Phase Two!

From the Supernatural convention in Chicago today, we got this snippet:

* Master Sergeant Kevin Wise, a Special Forces soldier, presented the guys with a letter from General David Petraeus, commander of the Multi-National Force in Iraq, as well as honorary Special Forces coins from his unit. Supernatural is the most requested DVD among armed forces personnel in Iraq and Afghanistan! The guys were amazed and touched, and presented Wise with a shooting script, signed by the cast and crew. Source.

Today, we're kicking off Phase Two of Operation: Winchester. In Phase One, people put together their own Operation: Winchester packages, got contact names and addresses from Anysoldier.com, and send packages themselves. This first phase of Operation: Winchester is ongoing.

Now, there's another way you can be a part of Operation: Winchester! In Phase Two of the project, Operation: Winchester is teaming up with The Staten Island Project Homefront to send more copies of "Supernatural" DVD sets to troops overseas. The Staten Island Project Homefront is a campaign that mails care packages to troops on a regular basis; please check out their website for more information. The folks at Project Homefront have agreed to include in their packages as many DVD sets as we can send them -- and they'll pay the postage for the care packages! All Operation: Winchester has to do is buy the DVD sets and have them sent to Project Homefront.

Even better, we plan to buy the DVDs via amazon.com (so we can take advantage of their free shipping) and use the Fandom Rocks! Amazon link, which means that Fandom Rocks! will get a portion of the sales price!

How can you help?

1) You can donate towards buying Supernatural DVDs for Phase Two by clicking here:

You can donate the cost of a set of DVDs (currently $39.99) if you like, but any amount will help and will be greatly appreciated. (Apologies for the screwy html -- anyone know how to fix this?)Alternate link: Donate.

2) Please help spread the word about the project!

Project Homefront mails packages roughly every six weeks. In order to be included in their holiday shipment, I'll need to purchase the DVD sets one week from today.

Thanks so much for your help!

We said hello to Master Seargent Wise, and he was familiar with Semper Fi Fund which Fandom Rocks is supporting this time around. He was very kind to chat with us quickly. I was amazed that they gave them those coins - he said there are two ways to get one: become a Green Beret or a Green Beret gives you one, and they are very rarely given to a civilian. Amazing.

He also said that the studio (?) is sending 3,000 copies of the S2 DVDs overseas! I may have misheard if it was only S2 or both seasons, but that is amazing.

It was a fantastic thing to happen on Veteran's Day.
I heard about the 3,000 copies -- how awesome! Hey, did you happen to get contact infor for the Master Sargent? I'd really love to be able to get in touch with him and maybe find out additional places we could send the DVD sets.
I did not unfortunately. You *might* be able to email Gary and Adam about that. He said he met them two years ago and has been friends since. If you explain it's for OpWinchester and ask for the info to be forwarded on, maybe?

I have a concern with the timing of this- I've seen a lot of people on my flist and elsewhere on lj expressing concern about purchasing DVDs at this time (due to the WGA strike.)

I was just wondering what your (the organizers) thoughts are on that, since I wonder if some people who would otherwise contribute will hold off, and the projec won't be as successful as one might hope.
Sorry for jumping in uninvited, but it is my understanding that the WGA is not advising boycotting DVD purchases. At the time of the beginning of the strike they had already pulled their proposal for increased DVD residuals off the table. The main concern currently has to do with payment for "new media" i.e. internet uses of writers' work for which they are not currently being paid at all. In truth, since they aren't currently working, the writers could probably use the residual checks.
By all means, jump in! :) I brought the issue up precisely because I wasn't sure myself about the situation and like I said I HAVE seen people talking about boycotting DVDs- so I thought it'd be good to address it in some way in connection with the post. (I know how generous the SPN fandom can be, and I'd hate to see the project do worse than it should simply because of uncertainty about buying DVDs.)

Umm, okay, maybe I'm challenged, but the link to donate just takes me to my own Paypal account page. Help?
Thanks! That one worked :-)
Got it! Thank you so much. :D

Funny coincidence! In a post on my personal LJ, I just posted that since the holidays were coming and because of the whole Con and coins thing, people should consider Op:Win to give our soldiers a little taste of home since they werne't likely to BE home.

GMTA!
Ooh, thank you so much for the mention; getting the word out is a huge help. :)
No problem. I also own the Supernatural Fans group at Cafemom, so I posted it there too.
Wow, this is so awesome cause it's so easy (among other things) and I'd been wondering about this since I saw that quote. Very cool, guys!
Thanks so much! :)
